Post Valentine’s Day

For Love – or- For Profit

Did you survive Valentine’s Day?  Better yet, did your pocket survive Valentine’s day?  If so, congratulations!  You have successfully graduated from the mass of Valentine’s day hysteria.   Don’t get me wrong, it is my favorite day of the year.  I will tell you why.  You see it’s the only day a man cannot go wrong in the eyes of his beloved.  Furthermore, it’s the only day people are open to receive love tokens.  People are funny nowadays when they receive love tokens.  Some assume there is a hidden agenda.  So on Valentine’s day, everyone gets Love!

Matthew 22:37-39 (AMP)
37 And Jesus replied to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’   38 This is the first and greatest commandment.  39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’

As you can see in this verse the Lord is clearly telling us we need to love Him first and then love others.  But not just love them,  love them unselfishly, seeking only the best for them.

According to Psychology Today, there are 7 levels of Love.

  1. Eros: Sexual, Passionate, Romantic
  2. Philia: Friendship, Goodwill, Trust
  3. Storge: Fondness, Dependability, Family
  4. Agape: Altruistic Love
  5. Ludus: Flirtatious, Uncommitted
  6. Pragma: Long-Term Love
  7. Philautia: Self-Love

Now let’s look at what the Bible describes as love.

  1. Eros: ► Sexual◄

Proverbs 5:18-19 (NIV) 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

  2. Philia: ► Friendship◄

James 4:4 (TPT) 4 You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world. Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God? Whoever chooses to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy!

  3. Storge: ► Family ◄

    Romans 12:10 (AMP) 10 Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor;

  4. Agape: ► Altruistic Love◄

John 3:16 (AMP) 16 “For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Quickly who would give their son for their neighbor? Only God that is who!  Only He can give us Agape Love.  Now I know you are asking yourself what does this have to do with Valentine’s day.  Well, the prefaces of this particular day is:  Love!

People try to buy it, sell it, barter for it, and or con their way to it.  Stores load up on stuff to convince you it’s Love.  They try to package and sell it.  Unfortunately, that is not how love is obtained or even reached.  To receive love one must first know love, Agape Love.  That is the love of the Father.  Only He can give us pure, true, unquestionable, unfathomable, and faithful love.  Only He loves us just the way we are.  Only He is Love!

Additionally, why is it my favorite day? Because it is the one day of the year people let their guard down and allow themselves to be loved.  People are loved all around the world. They are celebrated for their uniqueness. Married or not, they know it’s a day of love. Though I have to give credit to some singles. They practice self-love on this day. It is important to take care of oneself if we are not in tune with the Father.

So, ultimately, the goal of this day is to be surrounded by love.  That means giving love.  It means receiving love.  It’s a day to celebrate love.  I call it the day to celebrate my Father because He is Love.  So there you have it.  It’s the day I get to see His love manifest all around me.  With people who don’t even know it is He working behind the scenes.  You can see it in the classrooms when little girls receive their cards.  Their eyes light up with joy.  You can see it in a husband trying to budget some nugget for his wife.  He learns to lean and depend on the Father.  You can see it in the wife as she honors her husband, as she respects him and doesn’t ask for grandiose gifts.  She honors his love.  There’s a smell of love all around us.  It’s pure, it’s Holy, it’s unwavering.  So, next year, get saturated with love before making any purchases.  Get saturated with the one who created love.  I guarantee your pocket will feel different.  Instead of buying love, you will find ways to be love.  Think of Abba!  Think of His goodness!  Think of His creation!  Think of how much He Loves You!

John 3:16 The Passion Translation (TPT)
16 For this is how much God loved the world—he gave his one and only, unique Son as a gift. So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life.

You are a good, loving, kind, faithful, merciful, magnificent, and Divine Father.   You know exactly what we need before we even say it.  You know exactly what we’re searching for before we even confess it.  Abba, we have tried to buy love.  We have tried to find love in the wrong places and with the wrong people.  We have loved wrongly.  But you, my Father, you rescue us, you cleanse us, you purify us, and you save us from ourselves.  Abba, thank you for giving us a new look on love.  Thank you for teaching us about love.  Thank you for manifesting your love!  Thank you, Papa!  Thank you for your love!  Oh, how you love us.  Father, we pray for your love to be the only love we seek.  Only you are Worthy and only you are Holy.  In the precious-perfect name of Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!
